Facts About Nutrition and Diet and Asthma

Are you or your children among the 5.4 million people in the UK struggling to breathe as you suffer the symptoms of Asthma? If so, and because asthma can't be cured and triggers can't always be avoided, you must learn the links between diet and asthma and follow a sensible eating plan.

A wise eating plan will strengthen the endocrine system. Once this is achieved the asthmatic should be much relieved. The endocrine system is what can over-react to allergens such as pollen, dust, certain foods, etc.

Diet and Asthma
The Best Diet for Asthma

For 21 days a raw fruit diet with vegetable salad perhaps once a day. Include 1/2 cup of seeds, olives, half to a whole avocado and cold pressed vegetable oils every day. Use the cold pressed oil with lemon juice or MSG free soy sauce as a deliciously healthy salad dressing.

In order to get the essential amino acid ‘Histidine’ be sure to include alfalfa sprouts, apples, beetroots (raw, grate them finely immediately before eating), carrots, celery, cucumbers, endives, papayas, pineapples and pomegranates in your menu. Organic sodium is found in squash, cucumber, melons and papayas.

After 21 days have a raw broth made by placing the green leaves of vegetables, stems such as celery and root vegetables in a blender. Add water and sprinkle in some vegetable stock for flavour. Gently heat - but do not boil. Never use salt. Gradually introduce baked or steamed vegetables and as you strengthen, begin introducing more items to your menu.

Have protein and carbohydrates at separate meals as protein hinders the digestion of carbohydrate causing it to ferment and produce alcohol, ammonia, and acetic acid.

Go slowly, so that if you do have a reaction you will be able to pinpoint exactly what triggered the attack. Remain on a 75% raw plant diet, preferably vegan (no animal products at all) as that has brought about a dramatic improvement for many people. Fruit and green leafy vegetables are ideal.

Cereals must be oat or rice based. Mid afternoon, have a grated stewed apple with cinnamon/clove, or half an avocado to prevent cravings for sweets or crisps. Perhaps a bowl of vegetable broth or chicken soup for dinner.

Begin your day with a glass of boiled purified water and sip at least one litre throughout the day. Bath every evening and add a generous handful of both Epsom and Glauber’s salts to warm water.

Rinse the neck and shoulders each morning in cold water. If you can, immerse the whole body in a bath of cold water in the morning. Eat your main meal of the day at lunch time.

It is important to take unsaturated oils and vitamins A and D to improve the lining of the respiratory tract. Cod liver oil is ideal. To satisfy a taste for oily food, bake or dry-fry till cooked, then toss in sunflower or olive oil.

Goat/ewe milk and cheese is normally tolerated, failing that, try soya milk and cheese. If these appeal, use as a substitute for dairy products.

Diet and Asthma... Herbs for Asthma

For a homeopathic remedy, take Dr Reckeweg’s complex R 3.

Mix three drop of hyssop, lavender, pine or rosemary essential oil into a little carrier oil in the palm of your hand and massage into the chest. The carrier oil can be sweet almond, hazelnut, jojoba or sunflower. You may combine the last three essential oils, using one drop each.

To one teaspoonful of coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) add a cupful of just-off-the-boil pure water. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before drinking..

Pick honeysuckle flowers in season and fill a honey jar with them. Make sure they are all covered in honey (always raw honey, preferably from your own area) to prevent any blossom decaying. When the chest feels constricted, eat a couple of teaspoons every day.

Follow this up with comfrey tea. Use 1/4 cup of shredded herb, taken from a fully grown leaf. Top up with boiling water and leave to steep for at least 10 minutes. When cool, add honey to taste. Make fresh daily, avoiding young leaves that are not fully grown.

The weed stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) was recently scientifically tested for its antihistamine properties, with encouraging results. Hayfever and asthma sufferers experienced dramatic improvements after drinking nettle tea.

Thyme or mullein make a good tea, sweetened with barley malt. Liquorice is also good.

In some people external stress or an emotional problem can be the root of the problem. Asmatics are frequently anxious or perfectionist by nature. To reduce tension, drink Cal-M. This is a mineral powder of calcium, magnesium and organic apple cider vinegar which assists the heart, muscles and nervous system.

Dip a fully grown comfrey leaf in hot water to soften, pat dry. Wrap around the chest, either next to skin or over gauze.

Take Pacific kelp as it helps with breathing.

Diet and Asthma... Foods to Avoid with Asthma

All dairy products, wheat, egg, chocolate, fish, alcohol (wine and lager in particular because of additives) vinegar, caffeine (tea, coffee, colas, chocolate), refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, salt and anything containing chemical additives - msg, sulphur dioxide, sodium benzoate, sodium sulphite, tartrazine, etc. Pale coloured dried fruit (preserved in sulphur to keep its colour).

Sulphating agents are commonly used in beer and to keep greens fresh in salad bars. Sulphur dioxide is found in most wines, but generally speaking, there is less of it in bottled wine than in boxed wine.

Drugs or medication (remove only with medical supervision), onion, garlic, kale, cabbage, radish, watercress. Aspirin can precipitate an asthma attack.

Sodium sulphite as found on red meat (to keep it fresh looking), light coloured dried fruit, dressings, beer and wine, often causes asthma.

Sodium benzoate is a preservative found in margarine, sauces, sodas, cool drinks and some dried fruits. This particular preservative causes respiratory problems such as asthma and bronchitis.

Dust mite droppings in the air after vacuuming, which can take hours to settle. The Baxi Clean Air System claims to starve dust mites by reducing air humidity.

Constipation. Pressure from the tummy area affects breathing. That, together with the effect of toxic build-up in the colon, demands action. Poor digestion is common with asthma. Eat little and often so that the digestive tract does not get clogged up. Nuts can have an inflating effect on the system of an asthmatic.

Tartrazine (a food colourant banned in some countries) is openly accused of creating allergic reactions including asthma, migraine headaches, skin rashes and hyperactivity in children.

Chlorine is said to contribute to asthma attacks. Since all our drinking water has been chlorinated you may wish to use a water purifier. There are some excellent ones on the market. Personally, I am happy with the Brita jug which is relatively inexpensive with a proven record. There are more costly purifiers that screw on to your tap, and if asthma is in your family, that may be your better choice. Pet fur, feathers, cigarette smoke, household chemicals, fumes, etc., are best avoided.

Diet and Asthma... General Notes about Asthma

Generally speaking, asthma is worse in winter. Place a pack of frozen goods from the freezer between the shoulder blades during an attack.

There are three levels of breathing: 1. to the upper chest/throat area; 2. to the rib area; 3. to the tummy area. While well, experiment with all three levels.

The chest/throat breath is shallow, requiring little movement from the rest of the body. The rib breath is deeper and causes the rib cage to expand and contract. When breathing into the tummy area, the chest remains neutral and breathing is directed into the lowest part of the lungs - the waist and abdomen expand and contract with each breath.

Imagine breathing through a pipe going straight down into the abdomen, bypassing the chest altogether. Place one hand on your tummy and the other on your ribcage. Breathe in, deeply. You know you have it right when you detect no movement in the ribs, and the tummy expands. Practice tummy breathing and use it during an attack.

Children who were fed cow’s milk as babies are more prone to asthma. If breast-feeding is not an option, it is important to choose a formula not based on cow’s milk. Soya or goats milk are better choices.

Whether breast-fed or not, asthmatic children usually have an allergy to dairy produce, sugar and wheat. If handled without fuss, this need not be too great a problem. Gradually introduce more vegetables (young children love raw carrot cut into matchstick men), use honey instead of sugar and oats instead of wheat, e.g., oatbran muffins, etc.

If the child yo-yos between bad skin and asthma, both problems should improve.

Although asthma most commonly begins during childhood, it can develop at any stage of life. In older asthmatics, be wary of osteoarthritis developing.

Candida albicans (yeast infection) can manifest itself in many ways, including asthma.

Sunshine - at least 30 minutes per day on the skin and naked eye, benefits the endocrine system, which in turn promotes healthy adrenal glands and a return to homeostasis. Some gentle exercise is also recommended.

A report titled Dramatic Asthma Relief by Susan Millar - a former asthma sufferer for 40 years - explains how you can reduce YOUR dependence on asthma drugs with a natural and safe but very powerful and effective bioflavonoid supplement combination. The Report is said to present one of the most exciting prospects for asthma sufferers to beat wheezing, coughing and breathlessness.
